Breaking Through: How Taekwondo Transformed My Shyness into Strength
“When I was younger, I was always afraid to try new things. I was too afraid to fail or be judged by others. This fear of failure made me shy and reserved, and as a result, I didn't have much experience in joining organizations or participating in school sports. However, things started to change for me in senior high school. Slowly, I began to find the courage to try new things, and I became more interested in exploring different activities.
It was during this time that I discovered my interest in martial arts, particularly MMA, Boxing, and kickboxing. When I became a college student, I was excited to discover that there was a taekwondo club in my university, Sorsogon State University Main Campus. At first, I was hesitant to join because I was still a beginner and wasn't sure if I could keep up with the other members. But after some encouragement from my friends, I decided to try it.
Joining taekwondo was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I quickly learned that the members were kind and patient, and they were more than willing to teach me. I may not have been the best in the club, but I was determined to improve myself in taekwondo and other aspects of my life. Taekwondo has taught me discipline and effective time management. I must balance my schoolwork, ROTC, household chores, and taekwondo practice.
It has taught me patience, self-defense, and combat skills. Joining taekwondo also helped me to overcome my shyness. I made new friends and became more confident in myself. My parents were initially hesitant about me joining taekwondo because I was new to it, but they eventually came around and supported me. In 2024, I participated in the intramurals at our university, and I was thrilled to win a bronze medal. It was a great achievement for me, and it gave me the motivation to continue training and improving.
Looking back, I realize that my shyness and fear of failure had held me back in many ways. But joining taekwondo has helped me to overcome those fears and become a better version of myself. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned and the friends I've made.”
